127 Government Recognized Churches

An Egyptian committee has approved the legalization of 127 churches in the country. According to CBN News, the churches previously operated illegally.

Churches must obtain state approval in a process deemed too restrictive and slow. In response, thousands of churches operated without permits.

“Egypt has a long history of regulating church building, but many churches have not been able to complete this process. Instead, they were built illegally”the committee said in a statement.

In 2016, the Egyptian government passed a new law aimed at speeding up the legalization process. More than 1,000 churches have obtained permits since the law was changed.

Under the new law, a ministerial committee made up of the prime minister and the ministers of justice, housing and antiquities reviews church applications for approval.

At the end of 2018, after the legalization of more than 100 churches, the president of the Protestant Churches of Egypt said that the process would continue to improve.

According to Open Doors USA, Christians in Egypt face daily persecution from the Islamic population, but this is a step towards change. Open Doors USA said the Islamic religion “fuels discrimination and creates an environment that makes the state reluctant to respect and uphold the basic rights of Christians.”

According to World Watch Monitor, the Islamic State killed more than 100 Coptic Christians in 2017. Coptic Christians make up around 10% of the population.
