Mobile Connection Suspension

The Senegalese Association of Information and Communication Technology Users (ASUTIC) has decided to take legal action against the State of Senegal following the suspension of the mobile connection in the country.

The move follows a move by the Senegalese government to prevent the spread of fake news and calls for violence on social media, following protests that erupted in several cities across the country.

ASUTIC, as a defender of the rights of users of information and communication technologies, believes that this suspension of the mobile connection goes against freedom of expression and the right to information. According to the association, these fundamental rights must not be compromised even in emergency situations.

ASUTIC argues that the suspension of the mobile connection deprives Senegalese citizens of a vital tool of communication, especially at this time when information related to COVID-19 and protests is crucial. This measure also penalizes companies and economic players who depend on mobile connectivity for their operations.

The association is asking the courts to rule on the legality of the suspension of the mobile connection and to immediately restore access to the telecommunications networks. She also hopes that this legal action will spur the government to adopt more thoughtful measures to address the issues of misinformation and online violence, without compromising the rights of citizens.

ASUTIC stresses that restrictions on mobile connectivity must be proportionate and justified, and should never be used to suppress free speech or stifle dissent. Freedom of expression and the right to information are fundamental principles of a democratic society and must be respected in all circumstances.
