A Military Camp Attacked Near the Malian Border




July is off to a bad start in Niger. Several Nigerien soldiers were killed and vehicles swept away in a terrorist attack carried out on Monday evening by heavily armed assailants against the Inatès military camp in the Tillabéri region in western Niger, near the border with Mali, a we learned from concordant sources.

On Monday 1st, a regular army camp in western Niger, in an area close to the border with Mali, was attacked by armed men. This attack, which occurred at a time when Niamey will have to host this week (from July 4 to 8) an African Union (AU) summit which will bring together some fifty heads of state, was perpetrated by two kamikaze vehicles supported by bandits on motorcycles.

The major military base that was targeted is located in the region of Inates, in western Niger. Sensitive area, soldiers train there to take part in the United Nations peacekeeping operation in Mali (Minusma).

This attack comes on top of those by jihadist groups in the west and the raids by the Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram in the south-east that Niger must already face and confront.
