“Abdourahamane TCHIANI: Any intervention by ECOWAS will be perceived as an occupation”

In a recent statement, Abdourahamane TCHIANI expressed concern about any possible ECOWAS intervention in Benin, calling it an “occupation”. TCHIANI, a well-known political expert, pointed out that such foreign intervention measures could compromise the country’s sovereignty and cause additional tensions.

The threat of ECOWAS intervention in Benin has been raised due to the political crisis in the country. The situation has deteriorated since the controversial legislative elections of 2019, where several opposition parties were prevented from participating, which led some ECOWAS member countries to express their concern about the respect of democratic principles.

TCHIANI stressed that any military intervention by ECOWAS in Benin would be perceived by the population as a serious violation of its sovereignty and a foreign occupation. According to him, this would only aggravate tensions and cause more conflicts.

The political expert also pointed out that ECOWAS should take a more diplomatic and peaceful approach to resolving the crisis in Benin. He called for negotiations and an inclusive political dialogue between all political actors in the country, in order to find a lasting solution and prevent any resort to violence.

TCHIANI recalled that the stability of Benin is essential for the entire West African region, and that its collapse could have negative repercussions on neighboring countries. He urged ECOWAS to use all diplomatic and political instruments at its disposal to facilitate a process of reconciliation and democratization in Benin, instead of resorting to coercive measures which could cause more problems than they solve.

In conclusion, Abdourahamane TCHIANI expressed his concerns about any intervention by ECOWAS in Benin, stressing that it could be perceived as a foreign occupation and further undermine the stability of the country. He pleaded for an inclusive political dialogue and a peaceful approach to resolving the current crisis, in order to preserve Benin’s sovereignty and avoid a deterioration of the situation in the whole region.
