An AI-Generated Drake Sound Could Be Nominated

The arrival of generative AI poses enormous challenges in terms of copyright. The fields most affected naturally involve professions requiring creativity such as music, photography or, to an even greater extent, journalism. With the episode of viral and doctored photos of personalities, we have been able to see the impact that this technology can have.

The world of music is not at all spared and famous artists have also had their voices cloned on unreleased sounds. One of these songs has become so popular that it will soon be submitted for a Grammy nomination.

Heart On My Sleeve, an AI song that has gone viral

Indeed, the song Heart On My Sleeve produced by a certain Ghostwriter almost became a hit in the United States this year. The sound notably generated crazy streaming numbers on Apple Music and Spotify before it was removed over copyright issues. And for good reason, the music was by Drake and The Weeknd without the artists themselves being involved in the creative process.

To understand this imbroglio, simply remember that the voices of Drake and The Weeknd as well as their styles were cloned with an AI tool. The so-called Ghostwriter who is rampant on TikTok then wrote a text to make the AI tool sing while imitating Drake and The Weeknd. This gave birth to the sound “Heart On My Sleeve” which became very viral on social networks.

Heading to the Grammys?

After shaking up the codes, the instigator of the project (who is still unknown by the way) wants to submit his production for the 2024 Grammy Awards. The information was reported by the New York Times which confirms that “Heart on My Sleeve” will be presented in two categories including best rap song and song of the year. The most curious thing in the story is the possibility that this sound produced with AI could land a nomination.

Indeed, Harvey Mason Jr. who is the CEO of the Recording Academy and the head of the Grammys confided that Heart on My Sleeve met the creative criterion, because the texts were written by a human. However, things will be more complicated than they seem, as the Grammys also have general distribution requirements. This implies that the song must be available physically and on streaming platforms. But Heart On My Sleeve faces copyright issues, making it impossible to distribute.

Finally, we can see in Ghostwriter’s approach a provocation or a desire to attract the attention of the music industry. As proof, the latter recently released a new sound featuring the voices of Travis Scott and 21 Savage. He even goes further by requesting the agreement of these artists in order to commercialize the sound and promising them royalties.
