Six people, including a pregnant woman, escaped death when the elevator in Chicago’s fourth tallest building in the US collapsed, falling 84 stories after a cable cut.
The six people had boarded the elevator on the 95th floor of the building at 875 North Michigan Avenue, formerly known as the John Hancock Center, early Friday when they heard a loud noise as the elevator began to descend.
“At first I thought we were going to die,” Jaime Montemayor told CBS Chicago. “We were going downstairs and then I felt we were falling and then I heard a sound of clack clack clack clack clack clack.”
Montemayor, who came from Mexico City on a business trip with his wife Maña, said the couple held hands and began to pray.
According to the first elements, the fall would come from a faulty “lifting cable” declared the person in charge for the department of the buildings of the city. An investigation will nevertheless be carried out. The elevator had been inspected last July.
The elevator unhooked and did not stop until the 11th floor of the building, in a cloud of dust.
Quickly arriving on the scene, the firefighters had to break through a wall to extract the passengers, including a young pregnant woman, from the cabin. The operation, which took place between two floors, lasted three hours. None of the victims required hospitalization.
“It was a precarious situation where we had the cable snapped over the elevator and we couldn’t save ourselves, but we had to go through a wall,” Chicago Battalion Fire Chief Patrick Woney told WBBM.
