Apple’s MacBook computers come in two main lines Pro and Air. These two types of products often differ in terms of technical characteristics, but their prices are relatively high. The situation could however change soon, because Apple would look into the production of a low-cost MacBook in order to compete with Chromebooks.
Apple targets students
According to the Taiwanese site Digitimes, the Cupertino company could soon expand its product line with lighter computers at reduced costs. Rumor has it that Apple’s low-cost computers will be designed primarily to compete with Chromebooks which are popular among college students.
As proof, these computers embedding light configurations as well as Google’s ChromeOS operating system sold 33.5 million copies in 2021. Apple would therefore also like to enter this market where various manufacturers of classic PCs are making the law.

What will be the particularities of these products
To offer low-cost MacBooks, Apple will probably have to rely on a lighter operating system. In addition, the design of low-cost computers could be closer to that of classic models. Thus, the aluminum chassis and the finesse that are the hallmark of Apple will be maintained.
On the other hand, the major difference will be at the level of the technical configuration where many components will be set back. But, with the primary target being academic institutions and students, it’s possible the formula will follow the same trajectory as Chromebooks. In addition, the arrival of such a product should allow some users to complete their Apple ecosystem without breaking the bank.
However, these are only guesses, as no other precise information has been given by Digitimes. However, we note that marketing is possible in the second half of 2024.
Finally, even if the release of the lighter MacBook is not yet certain, remember that Apple is not at its first attempt on the low-cost segment. Indeed, the brand has already successfully launched an SE range for the iPhone in 2016. Since then, the light version of its other flagship has been updated with two other models, namely the iPhone SE 2020 and the iPhone SE 2022. The next version is also rumored to be released next year with a more modern design.
