Boys will be allowed to wear skirts to school

A primary school in Ireland will start allowing boys to wear skirts from September.

At the request of pupils, St Brigid’s National School in Wicklow, South Dublin, Ireland, will start allowing male pupils to wear tartan skirts to school.

The school accepted the student council’s proposal. The school will also remove the girls’ and boys’ toilet signs as part of this program. Staff hope this will make children feel comfortable, DublinLive reports.

Under the new rules, students are free to dress according to the gender they have identified, hoping teachers will help make everyone feel welcome and accepted.

Principal Maire Costello said some children question their gender identity from an early age and want to make sure everyone has a happy experience while in school.

She told the Irish Times: “If that means girls wearing slacks or boys wearing skirts, make no mistake. The most important thing is that the children feel comfortable and happy with the way they are dressed.”

Girls will also be allowed to wear gray trousers, with boys allowed to don the tartan skirt if they prefer. This will take effect from September.

It is believed that many other schools in Ireland and England could now follow suit.

The principal said that the reaction to this program had been positive and that the members of the student council were warmly congratulated for their excellent work.

She adds: “I’m very proud of them. They did their research and interviewed the students…they made their case to the board who were fully supportive of them.”
