Claude Sarraute, a prominent figure in the world of television known for her spontaneity and humor, has left us on Tuesday, June 20, at the age of 95. This sad news was announced by her son, Martin Tzara, to the AFP.
Throughout the decades, this literary icon made a lasting impact on the television industry. Notably, as a close friend of Laurent Ruquier, she never held back her opinions. During the promotion of her book, “Encore un instant,” in 2016, she revealed some insights into her love life.
Specifically, Claude Sarraute shared her preference for wealthy men who showered her with gifts. In an interview with “Télé-Poche,” she candidly expressed, “I have always chosen rich men who would give me presents. It never occurred to me to pay for a dinner. I had a strong libido and went for the one who tempted me the most, the richest one, but also the most patient. He had to tolerate my whims.”
Claude Sarraute cared little about others’ opinions and often divulged details about her personal life. She once confided, “Life should be lived with two or three people: the husband, the lover, and then the third. After a certain time, you get bored with both of them, so a third one comes along, and it starts all over again.”
She had been married three times. The first marriage took place in 1948 when she was just 21 years old to Stanley Karnow, one of the greatest American historians of the 20th century. They divorced in 1955, and Stanley passed away in 2013 at the age of 87.
Two years after the divorce, she said “yes” to physicist Christophe Tzara. He fathered her first two children, Martin and Laurent. Nearly ten years later, in 1966, the journalist experienced another divorce. The same year, Claude Sarraute welcomed her third child, Nicolas, with philosopher and writer Jean-François Revel. They married in 1967, and the following year, the couple had a daughter, Véronique. Jean-François Revel passed away in 2006.
