Cristiano Ronaldo Scores Winner in 200th International Appearance as Portugal Tops Iceland

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated his 200th international cap by scoring the only goal in Portugal’s 1-0 victory over Iceland on Tuesday in Reykjavik. The win keeps the Seleção ahead in Group J of the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Returning to the starting lineup after losing his place during the 2022 World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo extended his record of appearances for the Portuguese national team and reached the significant milestone of 200 caps.

Having already scored two braces against Liechtenstein and Luxembourg, the Madeira-born superstar also holds the world record for international goals, which he increased to 123 by finding the net late in the game, pouncing on a close-range pass from Gonçalo Inacio (89th minute). The goal was confirmed after a VAR check.

With this fourth consecutive victory, the champions of Euro 2016 maintain a two-point lead over second-placed Slovakia, who secured a 1-0 win against Liechtenstein.

Since taking charge earlier this year, the new Portuguese head coach, Spain’s Roberto Martinez, continues to rack up successes following triumphs over Liechtenstein (4-0), Luxembourg (6-0), and Bosnia and Herzegovina (3-0). The former Belgium coach has made some changes to the team, such as employing a three-man central defense, while maintaining the squad’s structure and hierarchy.

Most importantly, he has reinforced Cristiano Ronaldo’s status, despite the player being 38 years old and currently playing for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.
