Death of Politician Ousmane Tanor Dieng

The secretary general of the socialist party Ousmane Tanor Dieng died in Bordeaux following an illness, reports the BBC on its website.

Senegalese President Macky Sall expressed his compassion on his Twitter account.

Mr. Dieng was the president of the High Council of Territorial Authorities (HCCT) of Senegal, which is a consultative assembly which completes the institutional architecture in order to support the territorial development process. This institution intervenes, opportunely in the formation of opinions which reflect the concerns of the populations.

Born in 1947 in Nguéniène and a former graduate of the administration school, Ousmane Tanor Dieng was the diplomatic advisor to presidents Léopold Sédar Senghor and Abdou Diouf.

In 2007 and 2012 he ran for president where he did not win. In 2012, he obtained 13% of the votes, so he joined forces with candidate Macky Sall for the second round.

Since then, the Socialist Party, of which he is secretary, has been part of the presidential movement (Benno Bokk Yakaar).
