Exceptional Summit of ECOWAS Leaders in Abuja Following the Coup in Niger

The West African bloc, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), is mobilizing after the coup in Niger, which overthrew elected President Mohamed Bazoum. Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, recently elected head of ECOWAS, will host a special meeting of regional leaders in Abuja on Sunday, July 30.

This extraordinary meeting is an immediate response to the events in Niger, which have upended the constitutional political regime in the West African country. ECOWAS, under the presidency of Bola Tinubu, already strongly condemned the coup on Wednesday and pledged, alongside the international community, to defend democracy and support political stability in the sub-region.

The coup in Niger is the third in West Africa since 2020, after those in Mali and Burkina Faso. The security situation in the country was invoked by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, head of Niger’s presidential guard and president of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland, to justify the military intervention.

This special meeting in Abuja will be a crucial opportunity for West African leaders to discuss measures to be taken to restore constitutional order and stability in Niger. The situation in the Sahel, undermined by attacks by jihadist groups, requires a concerted and rapid response from the countries of the region.

This is a critical moment for ECOWAS, which must show leadership to restore democracy and the rule of law in Niger, while strengthening the cooperation region to address common security challenges.
