Four Indian Soldiers Killed In Shootout

Four Indian soldiers, including an officer, were killed in a fierce exchange of gunfire with militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Monday, police sources said.

The shooting broke out in the morning in the village of Pinglan, about 30 km south of Srinagar, the region’s summer capital. “Three soldiers and a major officer were killed,” said a police official from Pulwama district on condition of anonymity.

According to him, soldiers had cordoned off the village on the basis of reports of the presence of militants. “Once government forces targeted the suspicious area, militants fired shots at the vanguard, killing four people,” he added. “Although they were taken to hospital, they died.”

Unconfirmed press reports indicated that a civilian was also killed in this shooting.

This tragedy comes four days after a suicide bomber blew himself up while driving a car bomb near a paramilitary convoy in the same district, killing at least 40 soldiers.

A guerrilla war pits Kashmiri militants against Indian soldiers stationed in this region since 1989.
