On August 18, two alleged victims, Wade Robson (40) and James Safechuk (45), obtained permission to file a complaint against two companies linked to Michael Jackson: MJJ Productions and MJJ Ventures. The charges relate to allegations of sexual abuse committed by Jackson when the complainants were still minors.

Accusations dating back years

The two men, now adults, appeared in the world famous documentary, “Leaving Neverland”, broadcast in 2019 by HBO. In the documentary, Wade Robson revealed he was sexually abused for seven years starting in 1990. James Safechuk, meanwhile, said he was abused by the entertainer between 1988 and 1992, at his ranch.

These lawsuits are not new, since they date back to 2013. However, at the time, the courts considered that the statute of limitations had passed. The companies of Michael were therefore not subject to prosecution, as they had no legal obligation to protect the plaintiffs against such acts.

Nevertheless, the california court of appeals relaunched these lawsuits. According to this decision, a company that facilitates the sexual abuse of children by one of its employees cannot escape a positive obligation to protect these children, simply because it belongs to the alleged perpetrator of the offense. .

These new charges are reminiscent of previous cases where michael jackson had been accused of sexual abuse in 1993 and 2004. In 1993, he was accused by a 14-year-old boy, but the charges were dropped following a financial settlement. In 2004, he was found not guilty after a lengthy trial.
