Headphones Without Speakers? Yes It’s Possible With MEMS Technology

Even though the loudspeakers made the switch to miniaturization, their overall design never changed. They were always transducers composed of magnets, paper or even copper coils. But this traditional loudspeaker design could soon change with the popularization of MEMS (for Micro Electromechanical System) technology. Concretely, it will make us listen to sound via chips rather than dynamic transducers and this has advantages.

Not so new technology

The discovery of MEMS technology dates back to the 1970s, but its use has always been limited to specific areas. It was used in particular for the manufacture of audio sensors for the automotive industry, aeronautics and telecommunications. In addition, the technology is present in medicine where it is exploited for the manufacture of hearing aids among others.

New discoveries about MEMS therefore tend to make it more accessible by making it an audio listening technology. And the work was carried out by the company xMEMS Labs, which is preparing to market its first loudspeakers based on this technology. To do this, the company will market miniaturized sound devices incorporating silicon semiconductors.

The possible benefits of MEMS headphones

MEMS headphones could be less energy-consuming because of their small size, but also because of their power supply mode. Indeed, they operate via electrical voltage rather than direct current as with current transducers. In addition, the design of conventional loudspeakers always has flaws for sound quality. Users are in fact not spared from distortions and vibrations that can affect listening. MEMS technology as a sound system could therefore provide solutions to these problems.

Finally, the first MEMS headphones from xMEMS Labs are expected by the end of the year and will be produced by Singapore Creative Technology. These will include TWS (True Wireless Stereo) headphones which could change the standard for the general public.
