Applications are open for the Scholarship Program PhD Hong Kong 2024/2025 for new full-time doctoral students at Hong Kong universities, regardless of their country of origin, previous work experience and ethnicity.

Background Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Program

Established by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) in 2009, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims to attract the best and the brightest students of the world to pursue their doctoral studies in Hong Kong universities.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Program Eligibility 2024/2025

Candidates who wish to be admitted as new full-time doctoral students in the following eight universities, regardless of their country of origin, previous professional experience and ethnic origin, should be able to apply.

City University of Hong Kong
Hong Kong Baptist University
Lingnan University
The Chinese University of Hong Kong
The Hong Kong University of Education
Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
The University of Hong Kong

Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities in academic performance, research ability/potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.

Fellowship

The fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$331,200 (approximately US$42,460) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,800 (approximately US$1,760) per year for each fellow for a period of up to three years. 300 PhD scholarships will be awarded in the academic year 2024/25*. For scholarship recipients who need more than three years to complete the PhD, additional support may be provided by the chosen universities. * Universities in Hong Kong normally start their academic year in September.

2024/2025 Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Program Fields of Activity

Shortlisted applications, subject to their areas of study, will be reviewed by one of the following two selection committees, comprised of experts in the relevant areas of the council:

Science, medicine, engineering and technology
Humanities, Social Sciences and Business Studies

The selection criteria for the Hong Kong Doctoral Fellowship Program 2024/2025

Although the academic excellence of candidates is a primary consideration, selection boards will consider the following factors:

Academic excellence;
Research capacity and potential;
Communication and interpersonal skills; And
Leadership abilities.

How to Apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Program 2024/2025

Eligible candidates must first make a initial application online through the Hong Kong Doctoral Scholarship Electronic System (HKPFSES) to obtain an HKPFS reference number before December 1, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. Hong Kong time, before submitting applications for admission to doctoral studies in the universities of their choice. .

Applicants can choose up to two programs/departments at one or two universities for doctoral studies under HKPFS 2024/25. They must comply with the admission requirements of their selected universities and programs.

Since the deadlines for applying to some universities may immediately follow that of the initial application, applicants should submit their initial application as soon as possible to ensure that they have sufficient time to submit their application to the universities. .

Step 2: Submit full applications to proposed universities

After completing an initial application, applicants should submit complete applications for their selected PhD programs to the proposed universities quoting their HKPFS reference number by the respective university deadlines.
