A rock measuring over 13 cm, larger than a kidney, has entered the Guinness World Records. A 62-year-old man, the carrier of this massive stone, has been relieved of a significant burden. Sri Lankan military doctors successfully removed the world’s largest and heaviest kidney stone from a retired soldier, as announced by the army on Wednesday.
The former non-commissioned officer, aged 62, had a kidney stone weighing 801g, which is over five times the weight of an average male kidney, according to the army. It measured 13.37 centimeters in length, whereas an average kidney measures between 10 and 12 centimeters.
‘The removal of the world’s largest and heaviest kidney stone through surgical intervention took place on June 1st at the Colombo Military Hospital,’ stated the army in a press release. This announcement follows the recognition of the record by the Guinness World Records. The previous record (620g) for a kidney stone was registered in Pakistan in 2008, according to Guinness.
‘The most important thing for us is that the kidney is functioning normally despite this stone,’ said military surgeon K. Sutharshan. The retired soldier explained to a local television channel that he had been suffering from abdominal pain since 2020, and the prescribed medications had no effect.
Kidney stones are mineral salt formations that accumulate in the kidney, an organ responsible for filtering the blood.
