Lionel Messi Could Be Suspended For Two Years

Ionel Messi faces a two-year suspension for his remarks against the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol). The Argentine has accused the governing body of “corruption” following his dismissal in the minor final against Chile on Saturday.

“We were not to be part of this corruption, this lack of respect for the whole Cup. We were there for more. Corruption, referees and everything that does not allow people to participate in football, the spectacle, it spoils it a bit. There is no doubt that everything is done for Brazil, I hope that the VAR and the referee will not influence the final and that Peru can compete normally”, said the Pulga after the meeting.

After this unrestrained exit from Lionel Messi, Conmebol called his accusations “unacceptable” in a statement. And according to the rules of the instance, a suspension of up to two years could be applied against anyone who “insults in any way or means Conmebol, its institutions or its personnel”.

Such a sanction would mean Messi would miss qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as well as the Copa America to be held in Argentina and Colombia next year.
