This is by no means a person’s wish for the new year but this sentence is a slogan chanted since the release of the song Hwages” (Worries) by Saudi artist Majed Al-Esa.

Women who wear the niqab and especially who sing their rejection of the power and domination of men is the most striking in this clip.

In the first part of the song, women in niqabs get into the back of a car. Annoyed by inequalities, these women clap their hands and sing: “May God rid us of men”. We then find them rollerblading, scootering, playing basketball, dancing. The soundtrack evolves: “Men have made us psychologically ill”, “they are driving us crazy”, they dare to sing. The clip then takes us into “the men’s house”, which is none other than the White House, we can guess from the presence behind the desk of US President-elect Donald Trump, in the form of a puppet

“He says aloud what some people think quietly”

This song against a backdrop of protest against unequal treatment between men and women in Saudi Arabia has more than a million and a half views on Youtube. Last spring, the artist rocked Saudi Arabia with his Barbs clip, a dance that was too provocative for some people’s tastes. Many Saudis say they love the rhythm and message of Majed Al-Esa’s latest music video – while conversely, this work only provokes those who are the kingdom’s conservatives.

In Saudi Arabia men and women do not have the same rights. For example, women are not allowed to drive. Hence the first scene of the song which shows these women in the car.
