Michael Jackson’s Iconic “Moonwalk” Hat to be Auctioned in Paris

The hat worn by Michael Jackson when he first performed his famous “moonwalk” dance move will be up for auction on September 26 in Paris, announced the organizers of the event on Wednesday.

Jackson threw this headgear to the side of the stage on March 25, 1983, during Motown’s 25th-anniversary celebration, just before executing the backwards gliding dance steps to the tune of “Billie Jean,” captured by the cameras of the American NBC network. This iconic moment would go down in history.

Estimated to fetch between €60,000 and €100,000 (approximately $69,900 to $116,500), this piece will be the highlight of a rock memorabilia auction at the Hôtel Drouot, the main auction house in Paris. The sale is organized by Artpèges and Lemon Auction, who made waves last year with Noel Gallagher’s guitar, smashed on the night of Oasis’ breakup, which sold for €385,500 including fees.

The auction will feature around 200 lots, including photographs, posters, concert tickets, Madonna’s gold record, vintage guitars, costumes worn by Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore, Rolling Stones vinyl records, and more. The auction catalog will be available online on July 4th (lemonauction.fr).

Among the other notable items, there will be one of only 22 guitars produced in 1949 by bluesman T-Bone Walker, a major influence on artists like B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Page, and Eric Clapton. The instrument is estimated to be worth between €100,000 and €150,000 ($116,500 to $174,800).

In a more unusual offering, there will also be a section of the wall from the Bus Palladium, a Parisian club that was open from 1965 to 2022, signed by Carl Barât, Pete Doherty (The Libertines), Jean-Benoît Dunckel (Air), The Dandy Warhols, Beth Ditto (Gossip), among others. It is estimated to be valued between €5,000 and €8,000 ($5,800 to $9,300).
