Montana : Eighteen years in prison for a homophobic attack

According to local authorities, a quadragenarian individual has been sentenced to eighteen years in prison for opening fire on the residence of a lesbian woman in the state of Montana. In February, John Howald was found guilty by a federal jury of a hate crime and firearms-related offenses after a four-day trial.

Kristen Clarke, the Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, stated that “Howald sought to eliminate all LGBTQ+ members from his town by killing them.” She also added that he fired shots at the home of a lesbian resident with the implicit intention of “inspiring similar attacks across the country.”

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, John Howald was armed when he went on his rampage, possessing two automatic rifles and several other types of weapons.

It is believed that he had attempted to locate other individuals belonging to the LGBTQ+ communities residing in Basin, a small town in northwestern Montana.
