Nana Mouskouri Opens Up About Battling Pancreatic Cancer and Auctions Stage Outfits for Charity

“I will leave one day, maybe not too far away,” confided 88-year-old Nana Mouskouri to Gala magazine this week as she discusses the stage outfits she will part with during a charity auction for the Hospitals Foundation on June 19. These words were not chosen randomly, as the renowned singer, who resides in Geneva, has faced illness. Nana Mouskouri revealed for the first time that she had to fight pancreatic cancer.

The singer explained that she had suffered from the disease eight years ago. She had never mentioned it before: “I never wanted to talk about it. It was in 2015, I returned from Australia, and I underwent eight months of chemotherapy.”

Despite the shock, she remained positive: “I know you should never give up when you’re sick. You really have to fight.” Fortunately, she had the support of her husband, André Chapelle. “We got married in 2003, at the insistence of Jean-Claude Brialy, my dear friend and witness. André and I have known each other since 1964; he became my producer,” she explained.

“If I hadn’t had him, I wouldn’t have achieved everything I have. We are still in love. When he’s around, I feel good. I’m afraid of losing him. And it’s the same for him. I’m very happy to have found him. Or maybe he found me, I don’t know…” added Nana Mouskouri.
