New information revealed by Reporters Without Borders on the Martinez Zogo case

Reporters Without Borders (RSF), an international press freedom organization, recently released new revelations about the Martinez Zogo case. This case, which emerged at the start of the year, shocked public opinion and sparked strong reactions around the world.

Martinez Zogo, a Cameroonian journalist known for his courage and commitment to the truth, was arbitrarily arrested by Cameroonian authorities last January. Since then, he has been detained without trial, in precarious conditions and without access to adequate legal assistance. RSF has closely followed this case and is trying to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this detention.

The new RSF revelations suggest that Martinez Zogo’s arrest was not only motivated by political reasons, but also by economic motives. Indeed, the journalist was investigating a major corruption scandal involving influential figures in the country. It is therefore very likely that his arrest is linked to his journalistic research.

RSF also uncovered evidence indicating that Martinez Zogo was the victim of ill-treatment in detention. Testimonies report physical and psychological abuse inflicted on the journalist, as well as deprivation of food and medical care. RSF deplores these inhuman practices and calls for the immediate release of Martinez Zogo.

The international organization has also asked the Cameroonian authorities to guarantee the safety and physical integrity of Martinez Zogo, as well as to grant him a fair and transparent trial. RSF stresses the importance of respecting freedom of expression and the right to information in all democratic societies.

This case highlights the dangers that journalists face in the exercise of their profession in many countries. RSF will continue to support Martinez Zogo and other unjustly imprisoned journalists around the world, with the aim of asserting their fundamental rights and preserving press freedom.
