Nigerian Artist Turns Classic Cars Into Furniture (video)

A Nigerian artist has set out to redefine the furniture industry in Nigeria. Diseye Tantua creates unconventional furniture from car parts from the 90s.

In his workshop in Port Harcout is a bed made from a Mercedez Benz 200 series.

The 44-year-old artist hopes his artwork will help preserve the history and memories he says are found in used vehicles.

“Someone had created a table, a desk from car parts. I was inspired by this to create my office with my father’s car, which caught everyone’s attention. It pushed me to use the other parts of the car to do other things and that’s how I started.”said Tantua.

In 2016, Tantua made a table out of her father’s old car. The reaction to his creation was positive and so he started marketing his inventions. A year later, he held a solo show at an auto showroom in hopes of starting a conversation about recycling.

“You can’t find this furniture just anywhere. They are made with special cars used. Sometimes I leave them in poor condition and try to make sure there is less rust on them. I make sure that for every piece of furniture you find, you would want to go back and take a picture, you would want to be a part of it in some way”he added.

The Applied Arts graduate buys auto parts from junkyards and car owners.

“The end product depends on the finish…It hasn’t been easy and so far I’m still learning, still trying to get exactly what I want”.

Tantua furniture costs between $1,400 and $7,000, depending on the auto parts used and the complexity of the work.
