“North Korea Will Equip Its Navy With Nuclear Weapons”

During a visit to the naval command on Sunday, Kim Jong-un said, “The DPRK Navy would become a component of the state’s nuclear deterrent, fulfilling its strategic mission.”

Kim promised that units of the various North Korean armed forces “would be equipped with new armaments in accordance with the policy of expanding tactical nuclear weapons operations”, KCNA News, a Pyongyang-based state agency, reported on Tuesday.

He urged naval personnel “to continue to set high goals and to organize and pursue real maneuvers, which are as close as possible to real warfare…increasing combat capabilities to permanently deter aggressive US imperialist forces.” and their followers.

Separately, South Korea, the United States and Japan conducted a joint missile defense drill in international waters south of the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday.

The exercise followed an alleged launch of a space rocket by North Korea the previous week, according to the US Indo-Pacific Command.

Seoul said the drill was prompted by North Korea’s growing nuclear and ballistic risks. This includes their recent rocket launch, seen as a “clear” violation of UN resolutions banning ballistic missile technology launches.
