On Android, Google wants to end SMS in favor of RCS

[ad_1]

Launched 30 years ago, SMS could soon disappear. Indeed, this messaging protocol competes with Google’s RCS, which was previously offered as an option in the Messages application. Now, the company is moving to generalization by imposing the RCS as a default feature.

A protocol that Google promotes despite everything

The RCS is destined to become a universal standard as soon as it is popularized in 2018 on Android smartphones. However, Apple, which shares the smartphone market with Google, has always been reluctant to adopt this protocol. The Cupertino company has effectively remained attached to its in-house iMessage system, even if it is rumored that things could change soon. Nevertheless, Google can’t wait any longer as the company is shifting gears for RCS which obviously brings a lot of improvements.

The RCS (Rich Communication Services) notably offers enriched and interactive conversations like instant messaging applications. And like the latter, the protocol works via the internet connection (data or Wi-Fi). However, it also embeds a mode that allows you to switch to the traditional SMS / MMS couple in the event of a lack of connection. In addition, it should be noted that this type of default sending also works in case the recipient’s phone does not support the RCS standard.

The benefits of RCS

The RCS protocol retains its interest thanks to its many advantages. It offers, for example, dated acknowledgments of receipt and activity indications (when the interlocutor is writing). RCS also offers the possibility of sending multimedia files such as images, videos and gifs in addition to documents. In addition, the protocol allows sending emojis, sharing location and initiating group conversations.

In addition, it is programmed to support VoIP calls and video calls. The whole thing is crowned by its secure aspect, because all exchanges are encrypted from end to end. On the other hand, messages sent to non-RCS recipients do not benefit from encryption.
