Paid PhD Scholarship in Chemistry in Denmark
5 (100%) 1 vote
A three-year doctoral fellowship in experimental studies of friction at the molecular scale is available in the Department of Chemistry. The project will be under the supervision of Professor Esben Thormann and will start on 1 erSeptember or as soon as possible thereafter.
Responsibilities and Tasks
The thesis project will focus on atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based investigations of the different energy dissipation mechanisms associated with the sliding of hydrated polymer films against each other. The primary objective of this project is to separate the energy dissipation contribution of the direct molecular interactions between the two interfaces of the lamina from the dissipation processes occurring internally in the polymer films. Second, we will seek to design friction-controlled and tunable systems using switchable physical crosslinking agents and tunable wettability. Thus, the project is interdisciplinary in nature and will include preparation of polymer films, design and preparation of physical experiments, instrumental calibration, data processing and theoretical considerations for data interpretation.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) in physical chemistry, nanotechnology, physics, soft matter or equivalent. However, regardless of their level of education, the suitable candidate should have the logical mind of a physicist, but not fear chemistry. Experience with AFM, friction studies, polyelectrolyte films, scripting (e.g. in MATLAB) and general surface science will be an advantage but not a requirement. The candidate should furthermore be highly motivated, able to work independently and should be confident in written and spoken English. The candidate must strive for scientific excellence, be ambitious and hard-working. Only candidates with great talent, who seek to be among the brightest in their field, will be considered.
Approval and registration
The PhD scholarship is subject to academic approval and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs at DTU. For more information on our enrollment requirements and general planning of the doctoral program, please consult the Doctoral Guide of DTU .
We offer to
