Protesters Support Putschists in Hope for Change

Hundreds of young demonstrators flocked to the National Assembly in Niamey to support the Nigerien putschists. Like the situation in Mali and Burkina Faso, these protesters are expressing their desire to regain control of their destiny. The National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland (CNSP), which took power, is today symbolized by these young activists.

Although this radical fringe represents only a minority of the population, it nevertheless constitutes the visible face of the military junta in power. The coup, the fifth in Niger since 1960, left many residents perplexed as they went about their daily lives.

The voice of Nigerien youth rises

The demonstrations are animated by radical speeches and slogans such as “Down with France” and “Long live our army”. The demonstrators, strongly supporting the putschists, gathered with Russian flags in a show of solidarity.

Discontent with the powers that be in the Sahel region is a long-standing and common issue. The political class is often accused of corruption and illicit enrichment, creating a feeling of fed up among the population.

Doctor Moustapha Moussa expresses a weariness in the face of oligarchy, injustice and sectarianism. Multiple corruption scandals have contributed to fueling this discontent.

On the other hand, Zakari Harouna raises concerns about security, with conflicts present on almost every border in Niger, involving groups such as the Islamic State and Boko Haram. He hopes that the military, now in power, can bring peace and stability to these troubled regions.

Protesters call on France not to interfere in Niger’s affairs, expressing strong support for Russia. They claim to have come on their own, without inducement or outside funding.

These gatherings testify to a hope for a better future, marked by social justice and fair representation of all Nigeriens before the law.
