The tumultuous story of Senegalese opponent Ousmane Sonko continues to captivate the country and the world. Admitted to intensive care on the night of August 16 to 17, 2023, his state of health raises serious concerns. Ousmane Sonko, known for his fierce determination, began a hunger strike on July 31 after his imprisonment, denouncing the regime in place.

Since August 6, Ousmane Sonko had already been hospitalized in Dakar, the main medical center in the Senegalese capital. His refusal to eat and receive medical care had raised fears of the worst. This concern was unfortunately confirmed when he was placed in intensive care due to acute illness.

His lawyer, Maître Ciré Clédor Ly, confirmed this alarming state and specified that this decision had been taken because of the deterioration of his condition. Ousmane Sonko, sentenced twice recently for offenses such as defamation and youth corruption, had already seen his political situation weakened.

Sonko’s hunger strike was first and foremost an act of resistance against what he called a “dictatorial regime” led by President Macky Sall. Facing seven counts, including calling for insurrection and undermining state security, Sonko sought to draw attention to the country’s crucial political issues.

His hunger strike had also found an echo among his supporters and sympathizers. Other detainees who are members of his party, Pastef, joined the hunger strike in solidarity with their leader, thus intensifying the pressure on the authorities.

Ousmane Sonko’s situation remains critical. While he struggles for his health, he also struggles for his political commitment. The previous convictions he has suffered could have repercussions on his participation in the presidential election scheduled for February 2024. His withdrawal from the electoral lists, according to the Dakar prefecture, is contested by his camp.

The demand for immediate and unconditional release from his party, the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (Pastef), resonates as a call for justice and recognition of the voice of the opposition.
