Ghanaians will no longer need a visa to travel to South Africa. South Africa announced on Wednesday the addition of seven countries to its list of visa-free countries. Of the seven countries, two were African – Ghana and Sao Tome and Principe.

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has added Ghana to a list of seven countries whose nationals will be allowed to enter South Africa without a visa.

South Africa announced in September 2018 that it was finalizing a number of visa waiver agreements with other countries, including Ghana, to allow travelers to enter the country without the precious visa. .

According to Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, citizens of the seven countries can enter South Africa without a visa.

Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Cuba and Sao Tome and Principe are among the countries recently included in the visa waiver list.

The minister said in his statement that out of the 193 member countries of the United Nations, the Department had granted visa-free status to 75 countries.

“Of the 193 member countries of the United Nations, the Department has granted visa-free status to 75 countries. 16 are on our (African) continent and are members of SADC and 59 come from all over the world.”

He further revealed that they were still controlling which countries could be on the list; Nigeria, India and China, although their combined populations make up almost 30% of the world’s population.

“We will immediately begin discussions with them on how a visa-free regime would work. We still have work to do for three countries whose total population represents almost 30% of the world population, namely China, India and Nigeria,” the press release added.

“Tourism will soar if we relax the visa requirements for entering South Africa. We know that tourism is very important for job creation,” he said.
