Tension following new airstrikes in the North

Tensions persist in Mali as the former Tuareg rebellion, represented by the Coordination of Movements of Azawad (CMA), accuses the Malian army of having carried out new airstrikes on its positions in Anéfis. This series of strikes fuels fears of a resumption of hostilities in the region.

A CMA spokesperson reported that the Malian army had targeted their positions in Anéfis for the second consecutive day. The Malian authorities, for their part, claimed to have targeted “columns of vehicles of armed terrorist groups”, accusing these groups of preparing attacks against civilian populations and military posts.

The CMA and the situation in Mali

The Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA) is an alliance of predominantly Tuareg separatist and separatist groups. In 2012, she went into rebellion against the Malian state, alongside radical Islamists. Despite this, the CMA signed a peace agreement in 2015 with the Malian government.

However, tensions have intensified in recent months between the CMA and the military junta in power since 2020. These tensions are part of a context of rivalry for control of the territory and are exacerbated by the ongoing withdrawal of the mission of the UN deployed in Mali since 2013.

Response of armed groups

Mali’s military-led government has called on armed groups that signed the 2015 accord to resume dialogue. However, at the same time, armed groups have accused the Malian air force of having dropped bombs on their positions in Anéfis, without causing any damage.

In a statement, the CMA expressed its concerns about the escalation of hostilities and the potentially disastrous consequences of this situation. Relations between the CMA and the junta deteriorated, particularly following the withdrawal of the UN mission and tensions related to the transfer of UN camps to the Malian army.

The situation remains unstable and the issue of security in Mali remains of concern, with the constant threat posed by armed terrorist groups operating in the region.
