This is news that will not please the African Union Commission. The African institution on which there were suspicions of sexual harassment, finally recognized the facts.
According to a press release made public, the African Union announces its intention to “reinforce its policy of zero tolerance” and to institute a “comprehensive policy to combat sexual harassment which protects the victims and severely punishes the perpetrators”, reports Jeune Afrique.
The decision follows the findings of a committee set up to investigate allegations of sexual harassment at the African Union. “Sex for work” practices are said to be taking place within the institution.
The African Union has acknowledged that “incidents of sexual harassment exist within the Commission”, according to the conclusions of a committee responsible for an internal investigation after accusations received by anonymous letter, writes JA.
44 cases of alleged sexual harassment were identified by the committee which conducted an internal investigation. “The committee has come to the conclusion that sexual harassment is practiced”
“The evidence presented suggests that this form of harassment is practiced by managers against female employees under their command, including, but not limited to, on official business outside the workplace”
“employees with fixed contracts, volunteers and trainees”, by making young women “credible promises of contracts”, reports Jeune Afrique, which quotes the notes of the report drawn up by the committee.
A situation that could harm the image of the institution, which in recent years has made many efforts for more justice and development on the continent.
