After a lengthy manhunt conducted by US authorities over several years, he was finally arrested in 1996 and subsequently sentenced to life in prison two years later.

Kaczynski had been held for a long time in the high-security prison near Florence, Colorado, which also housed other infamous criminals such as El Chapo before being transferred in 2021 to a specialized correctional facility in North Carolina.

A brilliant mathematician but a reclusive hermit living without running water or electricity in an isolated cabin in the mountains of Montana, Theodore Kaczynski embarked on a dark mission during this period, opposing technological progress with his homemade bombs as his primary method of operation.

His initial targets were academics and airlines, earning him the moniker “Unabomber,” derived from “University and Airline Bomber.” His anti-technology manifesto, published in September 1995 in the New York Times and Washington Post, ultimately led to his arrest in April 1996.

Despite a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. The television series “Manhunt: Unabomber,” released in 2017, depicts the years-long pursuit of Kaczynski by US authorities.
