The European Union will come to the aid of the G5 Sahel countries. This was announced by Ms Federica Mogherini, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The European Union has decided to provide an additional 138 million euros, approximately 90 billion FCFA, to the G5 Sahel countries. For Ms. Federica Mogherini, High Representative of this institution for foreign affairs and security policy, this is additional support to the contribution that the European Union has already made to the five countries concerned, namely Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad and Mauritania.
“The European Union will support the Joint Force, including its police component, with an additional €138 million, on top of what we have already contributed,” Ms Mogherini said. This windfall will make it possible, she said, to finance the deployment of the G5 Sahel joint force “ including its police component “.
Federica Mogherini who was speaking after an audience in Ouagadougou with Burkinabè President Roch Marc Kabore, and foreign ministers of G5 Sahel member countries, also highlighted the priorities of the EU-G5 Sahel partnership
“We have decided to consolidate the partnership on the basis of the following priorities: ownership by the five G5-Sahel countries, in particular through enhanced coordination by the Permanent Secretariat, the definition of an integrated action framework for security and development and the identification of priority areas on which the efforts of the parties will be concentrated,” she added. Finally, the two parties noted the importance of “innovating in the methods of implementing aid, both in the area of support for the Joint Force and in development actions to respond quickly to the expectations of population”
