Electric cars are often seen as a cleaner alternative to internal combustion vehicles, but a new study finds these vehicles can also contribute to microparticle pollution from tires.

Electric cars produce little or no direct emissions because they don’t burn fuel and have no exhausts. However, this study, conducted by researchers at the University of Cambridge, sheds light on the indirect consequences of the use of electric cars on air quality.

Tire microparticles, also known as rubber particles, are formed during normal tire wear while driving. These particles are extremely fine and can penetrate deep into the lungs when inhaled. They are known to cause various health problems, such as respiratory disorders, cardiovascular problems and even the development of cancers.

According to the study, although electric cars have lower tire wear on average than internal combustion vehicles due to their lower weight, they are not exempt from this problem. In fact, low particulate emissions from electric car tires may contribute to greater accumulation of rubber particles in the environment, especially in urban areas where electric cars are commonly used.

The study suggests that this is mainly due to the expected increase in the number of electric cars on the roads. Although the total rubber particle emissions of electric cars are currently lower than those of internal combustion vehicles due to their limited number, this situation could quickly change if the sales of electric cars continue to increase.

The researchers therefore recommend improving methods for collecting and managing the rubber particles generated by tires. This could include measures such as installing suitable filters on road drainage systems, creating particle abatement devices near high traffic areas, as well as developing tire materials that are less microparticle-forming.

In conclusion, although electric cars are perceived as a greener solution, it is essential to understand and address the pollution problems caused by micro-particles of tires. This will require joint efforts by governments, scientists and the automotive industry to minimize this form of pollution while continuing to promote the use of electric cars.
