The Most Expensive Precious Metal Is Produced In South Africa, And It Isn’t Gold

When it comes to precious metals, gold is often the first to come to mind. However, there is an even rarer and more precious metal than gold: rhodium. Known for its exceptional rarity and unique characteristics, rhodium holds a place of honor in the world of precious metals. Mainly produced in South Africa and Russia, this metal has gained prominence due to its versatility and unique properties.

Although gold can captivate with its beauty, rhodium offers an enchanting combination of conductivity, durability and aesthetic appearance. As the price of gold climbs to over $1,850 an ounce, rhodium, meanwhile, reigns supreme as the world’s most expensive metal. Appreciated for its great resistance to acids and corrosive substances, rhodium is also used in the field of jewelery for its remarkable brilliance.

A hidden treasure in the depths of South Africa

South Africa plays a vital role in the global production of rhodium. Indeed, more than 90% of the world’s reserves of platinum metals, including rhodium, are concentrated in Africa. This precious metal, often mined as a by-product of refining copper and nickel ores, is the hidden gem of South Africa’s depths.

Within the platinum group, rhodium shines as the rarest metal, present at only 0.000037 parts per million in the earth’s crust. Although rare, around 16 tonnes of rhodium are mined each year, with an estimated reserve of 3,000 tonnes. These platinum group metals, such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, play a key role as catalysts in fuel cells and hydrogen-based energy systems.

Rhodium is also distinguished by its resistance to corrosion and oxidation. With a high melting point of 1,964 degrees Celsius, it fits in alongside platinum group metals like palladium and osmium. Its versatility is obvious: it remains insoluble in most acids and can withstand temperatures of up to 600 degrees Celsius. This adaptability makes it a valuable element used in various fields, ranging from the automotive industry to aerospace.
