Gabon’s new strongman, General Brice Oligui Nguema, met on Tuesday with Central African President Faustin Archange Touadera, appointed regional mediator for the country following last week’s coup, state television reported. ..
The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) has named Touadera a “political process facilitator” in Gabon following the August 30 overthrow of President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

He was instructed to meet “all Gabonese actors and partners in the country” with the aim of ensuring “a rapid return to constitutional order”.
The television gave no details of the talks, which took place a day after Equatorial Guinea, a member of ECCAS, said Gabon had been suspended from the group of 11 countries.
ECCAS has also ordered the immediate transfer of its headquarters from Libreville in Gabon to Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, the country’s vice president, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
In addition to Gabon, the Central African Republic and Equatorial Guinea, ECCAS includes Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Sao Tome and Principe.
Oligui, head of the elite Republican Guard, was sworn in as transitional president on Monday.
In a speech, he promised to organize “free, transparent and credible elections” to restore civilian rule, but without giving a timetable, and pledged to grant amnesty to political prisoners.
