The revelations of General Brice Oligui Nguema

Africa is the scene of many political transformations and social, and one of the issues requiring attention is the revision of labor laws. Recently, General Brice Clotaire Oligui, the new strongman of the Gabon following a military coup, raised this concern during a press briefing.

He expressed the wish to review the labor law in Gabon, in order to promote the employment of Gabonese in their own country, drawing inspiration from the example of other African nations such as Senegal.

The Gabonese context

Gabon is currently in the grip of a period of political instability following the disputed re-election of Ali Bongo for a third presidential term. This re-election resulted in a military coupthus ending more than fifty years of governance by the Bongo dynasty.

General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema is to be sworn in as Gabon’s transitional president on September 4, according to a military statement quoted by Agence France Presse (AFP).

The challenge of Gabonese employment for General Brice Clotaire Olingui Nguema

One of the main challenges facing Gabon is the high rate of unemployment among its population. The General pointed out that companies in the country often employ more foreigners than Gabonese.

He cited the example of a company where only two Gabonese were employed among the 200 employees. This reality has raised concerns about the access of Gabonese to employment opportunities in their own country.

To support his argument in favor of revising the labor law, the General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema mentioned the case of Senegal, where the majority of a company’s employees are Senegalese. This approach aims to ensure that local human resources are prioritized in the world of work. He also mentioned that internships for foreigners in these countries may be difficult to obtain due to this policy.
