A tragic incident occurred in a Chicago suburb on Wednesday, where a young child, reportedly 4 years old, was accidentally killed by another child with a firearm, according to a statement released by the police to AFP on Thursday.
This heartbreaking event serves as another grim reminder of the heavy toll the United States pays due to the widespread availability of firearms. The incident took place at approximately 10 a.m. local time on Wednesday, when law enforcement officers discovered that a kid had been “accidentally shot by another child from the same household,” as stated in the press release.
The father of the fatally wounded girl, who was in lawful possession of the handgun used, promptly called emergency services. He informed investigators that the pistol was stored in an elevated position within a closet, as reported by the authorities in the town of River Grove, located in the western suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. According to the “Chicago Sun-Times,” the deceased child was a 4-year-old girl.
Unfortunately, such tragedies are not uncommon. Every year, 19,000 children are killed or injured by firearms, according to the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, which campaigns for stricter gun control measures. In 2020, firearms became the leading cause of death among young people aged 1 to 19, surpassing car accidents and drug overdoses, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
